[Sneap] RF interference

Dear SNEAPers,

A few months back Wayne State University in Michigan began to disassembled
their KN accelerator. (It had not seen use for almost 10 years.) Among the
items that we were able to rescue from scrap metal dealer was the RF Ion
Source. We have installed it in the place of the duoplasmtron in our EN and
fired it up yesterday. We have hooked up a 3kv supply for the extraction
voltage, but are planning to hook up a supply that can provide up to 10kv
once that supply has been adapted.

Right now we are getting out around 20na to the NIS faraday cup while using
the duoplasmtron's gas exchange. We have a sodium exchange oven and plan on
installing it soon. This should greatly increase the yield of negative
ions.

The thing that I need help on, is, when the RF source is on, the RF fields
generated by it are interfering with some electronic equipment in close
proximity to the source. I even have a soldering station that will not
operate within 20' form the RF source. Can I install some kind of an
effective RF shield around the source, or do I need to install better
shielding around the effected equipment. Maybe I need to do both?

Find attached is a few photos of this installation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Allan Kern
