Hi Chris,
We use Barden high precision bearings (PN: 38FFTX79K G-42). We
originally put these into the UW NPL GVM when I was there doing AMS,
and started using them here at CAMS when we first had a bearing
failure here several years ago. The seem to be doing well at both
locations (although I don't know if Carl/Greg have since gone to
other bearings at UW).
We got the high precision bearings at UW after we found that we
were seeing a lot of rotational frequency noise in the GVM signal (58
Hz fundamental, if I remember correctly). This noise was
significantly reduced when we rebuilt the motor with the Barden
bearings - I think they were important, but the rebuild itself may
have helped alot.
I would be very interested to hear what alternatives you find
(especially if you think a different type is better than the Barden
bearings).
Have fun.
Tom.
