Tom,
Recently, at Vanderbilt, our VdG switching magnet exhibited much flow restriction, such that the magnet power supply would not stay on. After a slew of clues from SNEAPERS as to how to correct this directly, this is what we ended up doing:
Buying a complete coil cleaning kit from the Little Giant Pump people. This kit consisted of a chemical pump of rather small capacity, a 5 gallon polyethylene tank with vinyl tubing. All you had to do was add chemical, and hook up the hoses. We used the chemical Drycid, by Chemetall Oakite Company. This is a safe sulphamic acid. We mixed 8 oz in 2 gal of water, and let the pump run automatically for about 8 hours. The flow showed clearing after a few hours, and the flow rate increased x4.
The pump kit was model no. GKPK-SC, price $336.
Little Giant is located at P.O.Box 12010, Oklahoma City, OK 73157

We bought Drycid from a local chemical supplier.
Cheers,

Subject: [Sneap] cleaning/flushing magnet coils
Fellow SNEAPERs:
I just got some old quads from the IU cyclotron and when I ran water thru the coils I got a lot of crud out. I was wondering what other labs do to purge their magnet coils? I'd like to clean/flush them out somehow before hooking them up to our water system. Any ideas?
Thank you. Cheers!!!!
