[Sneap] Duoplasmatron filaments

Ovidiu,
We have used tungsten filaments for many years now. Ours is a very
simple approach, with a single loop of tungsten wire that I bend by
hand. In the beginning we had a clamp arrangement to clamp the wire to
the filament legs (ours are nickel legs), but this was never quite good
enough contact, with thermal expansion, etc. So now we simply spot weld
the filament directly to the leg.
It seems to work quite well, but we only run helium in our source, so I
can't speak about whether one makes more or less beam with the wire than
with the mesh. Helium is very difficult to make well, and our experience
with the tungsten has been at leas as good as with the mesh, and a lot
less trouble.
I hope this helps,
Larry
