[Sneap] alternatives to SF6

In 1988 I was still learning the EN, and found it very unstable at high voltage. I had almost 30% SF6, but records showed that the CO2 inventory had been permitted to deplete, and tests showed ~2%. I read a SNEAP (always go the the source of all things electrostatic) paper by Sato that described the need for a dipole to slow down the electrons. I talked it over with the Atomic Physics people that I worked with, and they agreed that it made sense. I added one cylinder of CO2 and went from sparking at 4MV to steady at over 6 MV!

So, the SF6 lets you lower the pressure, but the N2:CO2 ratio needs to stay 4:1. BTW, I never ran at over 125 psi in the tank, thanks to the SF6.

Stay out of the High Voltage!
