Post Doctoral Scientist in Experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics
Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory, Columbia University

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research scientist to
participate in cross section measurements of the associative
detachment reaction H + H- forming H2. This reaction is important
during the formation of protogalaxies and the first stars in the early
universe. Currently we are carrying out proof-of-principle
measurements. Laboratory skills required include working with fast
ion beams, ion optics, ultra-high vacuum techniques, infrared lasers,
apparatus design and construction, and single particle detection for
ions. Computer skills required include Labview, Autodesk Inventor,
Simion, Mathematica or the like, Windows and Linux. The applicant
should have a strong background related to at least some of the areas
listed above. A proven research ability, evidence of future research
potential, the ability to work both independently and cooperatively
with others, and demonstrated written and oral communication skills
are highly desirable.

The position is available starting immediately and is initially for
one year, with additional years contingent on performance and
continuation of funding. A recent (or soon-to-be-completed) Ph.D. in
physics, applied physics, chemistry, or a related discipline is a
requirement. The candidate should send a curriculum vitae, a list of
publications, a brief statement of laboratory experience, and arrange
to have three letters of recommendation sent. Incomplete applications
will not be reviewed. Applications and letters should be sent via
regular mail to

Dr. Daniel Wolf Savin
Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory, MC 5247

or via email to

savin at astro.columbia.edu.

Candidates will be considered until the position is filled. Further
information can be obtained from http://www.astro.columbia.edu/~savin.
