I would tell the Dean that it been depreciated many times over since 1970 and that, for inventory purposes, it has scrap value now. On the other hand, he should know that its replacement value is approximately $1M! Quentin Kessel, The University of Connecticut

Subject: [Sneap] a money question

Hi all,

I have an odd question. We have an early '70's vintage HVE 400 kV accelerator, and for some ominous reason my Dean wants to know what it's worth. My first inclination is to say a bazillion dollars, but that's just me. I doubt you could buy such a thing anymore, but if you could, what might you expect to pay? I'd guess that sort of $100-$300k might be appropriate.

Anyone have any thoughts? Otherwise I'll go with one bazillion.
