Remove the two side plates (screws).  Remove the sample vial (not the empty 
reference vial).by pushing it through.  .  We can't remember for sure, but 
believe that the fragile coil was very tight on the original vial.  If 
necessary, you could try refilling the vial in place.  We have sometimes 
broken the vials.  Fill the vial with a millimolar solution of MnCl4.4H20 
(try 1.1 grams per 100 ml water).  We now seal the vials with epoxy or 
Q-dope rather than the original stopper.  Insert the vial and replace the 
metal plates.  Voila!
