Ludwig,
Our experience with "replacement" coils has been bad. HVEC replacement
coils with nominally the same number of turns produced significantly
different fields than the original ones. This was for a 3" HVEC quad. Alan
Cooper reported on this at the last SNEAP. Although we don't understand why
a coil with supposedly the same number of turns should produce a different
field, we decided that we had to use them is sets of 4 in a quad singlet
rather than replace just one.
I understand that the decommissioning of the Minnesota MP will be handled by
Jeff Ashenfelter (ash at mirage.physics.yale.edu) from Yale but that the
process is delayed. I strongly suggest getting 4 coils or the whole quad.
