Hi:
As a side note: we used BN canals in the ion source of the AN2000 machine at UNT in the early 70's to provide Boron beams for inner shell ionization studies. We made our own canals with no problems.

  Hi
Used BN many times never performed as well as quartz canals. Have purchased quartz from Potentials and HVEC but they are getting expensive, many times I have reclaimed quartz by cleaning in a dilute solution of hf and rinsing with de-ionized water. They then should be inspected for cracks and chips, as this will cause extreme difficulties in getting good output. I used to dry them in a vac. oven.
Also if machining BN make sure the hole has a smooth bore,I always check the canals but had difficulty once with rough BN tip, inspect with magnification as output difficulties will be even more severe if swirls exist

Good Luck but BN is a last resort for us.

    Hello all,

I am looking for a supplier of Boron Nitride that can be machined down for making canals for a Van De Graaff ion source. I have found a supplier (Saint-Gobain Advanced Ceramics) but they have several different types of Boron Nitride and I am not sure which one I need. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
