Fred,

I did give a presentation at SNEAP 2008 that described how we repaired our GVM by having the stator coils rewound. It is a straightforward process that can be routinely accomplished by any competent motor repair facility at a cost of a few hundred dollars.

Rewinding fractional horsepower motors is an unusual request only because they are not usually worth the cost to repair. In our case, a new identical replacement motor was found at a cost of somewhere north of a thousand dollars, but we used the re-wound motor anyway to avoid having to machine the new motor housing to fit into our existing GVM housing. The manufacturer of our motor is still in business and offered to produce the motor as a special-order item for about ten thousand dollars. The replacement was instead purchased from a thrid party and it now sits on the shelf as a spare.

In my opinion, just about any fractional horsepower ac motor should work, provided it runs in your pressure vessel without overheating. The rotation speed is totally irrelevant, but it should have good bearings and very little run-out of the shaft to minimize ripple in the output. If you can shoehorn a replacement into place, and re-attach the chopper blade to its shaft, it should perform okay.

  SNEAPer's:

We are looking for a replacement GVM motor for our HVEC KS-4000 Van de Graaff. The original manufacturer no longer exists, and the horsepower and RPM ratings we are finding difficult to match. I believe the original HVEC part number is A-4198. The motor details are: Howard Industries, 115 VAC, 1/20 HP, 3600 RPM. Does anyone know of possible sources for compatible motors, or is there possibly one out there that is no longer needed? Any assistance would be appreciated.

  Regards,

  Fred Bateman
